Shaun Dorney

Shaun has been working with BRYO since 1988, appointed Associate Conductor in 1989 and Director of Music in1995. Whether conducting BRYO at Carnegie Hall in New York or from behind the goal posts at a Broncos match, Shaun relishes each opportunity to work with this wonderful group of youth musicians. With Associate Conductor Erin Thomson, Strings Conductor Rachelle Lee and Jazz Ensemble Director Kendal Thomson Shaun strives to give BRYO an exciting and vibrant presence in the Brisbane, Queensland and Australian Music World.

Over a career spanning 4 decades, Shaun has been director for various music camps and festivals across the nation and was Co-Director of Music for the McGregor Summer School at the University of Southern Queensland and Director of the Northern Territory Youth Music Camp. He has adjudicated at many eisteddfods and festivals; was program consultant and assistant Musical Director for the Brisbane Festival’s highly successful What a Classic! And all that Jazz! series; and Conductor/Arranger for the Queensland Music Festival Logan spectacular Under this Sky in 2015. Shaun is a past National President of ABODA (Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association), which is aimed at furthering the skills of Australia’s conductors.

Shaun was also Music Co-ordinator for the Logan-Beaudesert District, Education Queensland 1991-2012, organising camps, festivals and functions catering for over 4,200 students annually in 55 schools and providing professional development and support to Music Teachers.

An Instrumental Music Instructor in brass, woodwind and percussion, Shaun is also the Director of Music of the Logan Youth Music Exchange (LYME), which has toured since 2001 to Logan’s Sister Cities – 7 times to Japan, twice to China and once to Taiwan.

He has been Musical Director for many stage productions, and has also toured Hawaii, and New Zealand and numerous parts of Australia with school and community bands and orchestras.

Shaun is Fellow of the University of Southern Queensland, Life Member of BRYO and was Logan’s Citizen of the year in 2006.
